Monocle Ginza Night

A Hazy Night Filled With the Best Japan has to Offer in the Heart of Switzerland

Photography for my employer Tyler Brûlé (Monocle & Winkreative)

In a rare and extraordinary event, Monocle's Swiss headquarters played host to an exclusive night of Japanese delights. The atmosphere was electric as guests were transported to the vibrant streets of Ginza, Tokyo, right in the heart of Zurich's eclectic Seefeld district. The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the stunning cherry blossoms adorned the city's side streets, creating a magical atmosphere.

Leading the charge to bring the spirit of Japan to Switzerland was Mr Tyler Brulé himself, owner of Monocle and Winkreative – who also happens to be my boss. His passion for Japan's welcoming culture, impeccable service and vibrant nightlife in Ginza has become something of a legend. Tyler was determined to recreate the magic in Zurich. Having experienced his drive first hand (read here soon) on a sleepless night wandering the streets of Ginza and singing our way through a handful of karaoke bars, I was beyond confident in the venture.

Even before we had worked out the technical details, Tyler had invited three geishas, equipped with their kimonos and ready to lead the lucky invitees through an unforgettable evening. The criteria for participation were simple: a strong voice or a sharp sense of humour, and certainly a thirst. With these requirements in mind, the geishas gracefully led the way to Dufourstrasse 90, where the stage was set for an epic karaoke extravaganza.

As the night unfolded, surprising talent emerged, with karaoke performances that would put even seasoned professionals to shame. It felt as if the air was filled not only with the upbeat tunes, but with the spirit of Japan itself. The lovely service left everyone in awe as waiters effortlessly catered to every guest's desire, creating an atmosphere of pure contentment.

The elegant lounge at the back of the Monocle Café was filled with cigarette smoke, whilst a local Japanese chef fed the crowd through the night with simple, delicious dishes and a beautifully lit bar was stocked with whisky from the pioneering Japanese brand, Suntory. Nothing better to accompany a night of singing than a glass of good old Suntory whisky, adding a touch of authenticity and merriment to the occasion.

Convinced by my photography I took during our business trips, Tyler entrusted me with the task of capturing the magic of the night through my camera lens. It was no easy task as the dim lighting challenged my camera capabilities. However, as luck would have it, the intimate atmosphere perfectly captured the hazy and cosy mood that pervaded the room. Each shot tells a story, illustrating the vivid moments of a night to remember.

As the last notes of karaoke faded and the guests disappeared into the darkness, it was clear that this first official Ginza night in Switzerland had been a resounding success. Laughter and applause filled the air, mingled with the echoes of beautiful melodies.
